Top 10 Comic Book Kickstarters In 2023 + Is It Okay That "Scott Pilgrim: Takes Off" Strays From the Source Material?
Lifeline Comics ranks their favorite Kickstarters of 2023. Plus, they discuss what makes a good adaptation with Netflix's Scott Pilgrim: Takes Off!
Hello Lifeline Comics readers!
We've got an exciting newsletter in store for you this week. We want to celebrate all the wonderful Kickstarters that have been released in 2023 with our official Top 10 list. This will be the first of a few 2023 Top 10 pieces as we head into the new year.
And if that's not exciting enough, we're also going to take a look at some anticipated releases like: Disney’s Wish and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
Let's get into it!
HAUNTING/Like Father, Like Daughter Crossover PRIDE 2024 Variant Launches on Kickstarter December 11th!
Lifeline Comics launches our first December Kickstarter campaign with a very special reprint of our first collaboration together: HAUNTING/Like Father, Like Daughter Crossover #1.
We have plenty of Pride Events lined up for Summer 2024, and wanted to do something special for the occasion. So we thought why not print a very limited run (150 copies to be exact) featuring a LGBTQIA+ Variant Cover of one of our favorite stories!
Now, we understand not all of our Lifeline Comics’ readers live on the East Coast or can make it to Pride Events, so we wanted to give the opportunity to purchase the comic outside of these events for a VERY limited time.
This short Kickstarter campaign will also include our Exclusive Summer 2023 Trading Card from last year’s Pride and Comic Con events if you’re interested in collecting all our Pride goodies.
The campaign will be live for 10 days, launching on December 11th! Don’t miss out!
Top 10 Comic Book Kickstarters of 2023
With 2023 coming to a close soon, we wanted to run through each of our Top 10 Comic Book Kickstarters of the year!
There have been literally hundreds of amazing Kickstarters this year, so this was not an easy list to make. But we tried to focus on those projects that really stood out as having tried something new and unique.
Note that our Top 10s are based exclusively on the concept of the comic and the ways that the Kickstarter presented them. Not all Kickstarters have fulfilled yet, so we can’t judge based on the quality of the final product.
Let’s get into it!
10. Kat’s Pick: The After Death Book One
Creators: Brandon Hayman
Kat: This was a smaller campaign, but one that caught my eye with its whimsical elevator pitch and Charlie Brown styled art. It’s an existential, slice of life story about the problems you face even in the afterlife. The book is an affordable throwback to comic book strips all through a modern lens.
10. Phil’s Pick: Everyday Fears: A Slice-of-life Horror Comic Anthology
Creators: Matt McGrath, V. Gagnon, Brandan Tobin, Jon Berg, Shen Travis, Otavio Colino, Darren Vogt, Corey Ranson, Kay Woolhiser, Lyndon Radchenka, Frank Cvetkovic
Phil: We also talked about this project a couple of weeks ago in the “Kickstarter Spotlight” section of our last newsletter. And like I said there, this was one of the biggest no-brainer backings for me of the year.
Everyday Fears is a slice-of-life horror anthology that sees monsters dealing with everyday problems and showcases a more mundane side of the paranormal. That’s such a fan an interesting premise - one that particularly excites me as a fan of both types of stories.
The Kickstarter presentation is also exactly what I like to see. We’re given an summary of the anthology itself, previews of the stories featured (which are appropriately varied in topic, theme, and art style), and are introduced to the creative team. These items should be a no-brainer. But I can’t tell you how many projects (especially anthologies) fail to actually show you what stories are in the book with preview pages. Kudos to Everyday Fears for giving me everything I want to see!
9. Kat’s Pick: Pulp Girls: Swiss Army Woman 1-2
Creators: Jason Martin, Monika Maccagni, and Ronaldo Barata
Kat: Swiss Army Woman just shows how fun comics can be! A woman who can switch weapons attached right onto her leg. It’s a simple premises with an anime-like art style that will sure get you pumped.
There are also plenty of GREAT variant covers that will catch your eye. An element that can be a secret “weapon” to any successful Kickstarter. It’s a smart way to have higher priced tiers, all while showcasing different art styles and genres.
9. Phil’s Pick: Hospice (Various Projects)
Creators: Travis Gibb, Russell Nohelty, Jamie Primack, David A. Byrne, Michael Watson, Frank Martin, and more!
Phil: Looking at 2023 Kickstarter Comics, it’s impossible not to notice the biggest Kickstarter crossover event to date: HOSPICE!
Six different comics from different creative teams - all taking place in the same shared universe. The centerpiece of this is the Rising Suns Hospice, a transitional facility for evil men and women to cross over from the physical realm to the spiritual realm…and for demons to cross over to the physical realm!
Each Kickstarter has its own unique story and pitch to justify your backing. And you can’t help but be impressed by the coordination and scope of these six Kickstarters launching in the same window. I definitely hope this isn’t the last big Kickstarter crossover we see!
8. Kat’s Pick: Cristabel Vol. 1
Creators: Erica Schultz, Jazzlyn Stone, James Emmett, Amagoia Agirre, and Cardinal Rae
Kat: One of the most important elements of a great Kickstarter is a catchy elevator pitch. And Cristabel had me at “princess warrior”! Schultz has been a powerhouse with Kickstarter installments like the Deadliest Bouquet (that would eventually land in the direct market with IDW) and her work at Marvel Comics. She carries that experience to create a clean looking page that simply displays all the reasons why you should support the campaign.
The book is stacked with some of the most talented variant cover artists in the crowdfunding game like Natasha Alterici and Skylar Patridge. It’s a book that I couldn’t wait to get in my hands!
8. Phil’s Pick: Sapphic Pulp: Collected Tales of Love and Desire
Creators: Natasha Alterici, Liana Kangas, Michele Abounader, Chris Shehan, Fell Hound, and more!
Phil: If you know Lifeline Comics, then you know we’re a sucker for queer stories. And especially for unique queer anthologies. And Natasha Alterici delivers that in spades.
Sapphic Pulp is a 120 page collection of 10 short erotic comics from a team of incredible queer artists. But what really makes it stand out to us is the variety. The overarching theme is 18+ WLW stories, but there is plenty of variety in tone. To quote the Kickstarter page: “It's at times hot and silly, and other at others steamy and sentimental, but it's always Sapphic as hell.” We can also appreciate that the anthology sets itself apart from the market by delivering longer stories, with each entry ranging from 10-16 pages.
With over 1,500 backers and $50,000 raised, Sapphic Pulp absolutely dominated on Kickstarter and was deservedly one of the most successful comic projects of the year.
7. Kat’s Pick: Cthulhu Invades Neverland - 200+ Pg - Graphic Novel
Creators: Travis Gibb, Heather Gibb, Jérôme Gagnon, and more!
Kat: First they pitched a tent in OZ, then they got sucked into Wonderland, and now they’re invading Neverland.
Kickstarter is about community, and I love when you bring that community together and make something amazing. Backing over 1,000 campaigns, Gibb is one of Kickstarter’s staples, who is always trying to think outside the box to bring the comic book community together. And what better way to do that than with an anthology!
He continues to reinvent their best known franchise (Cthulhu Invades) by playing in public domains’ different sandboxes and inviting pillars of Kickstarter to tag along in the adventure: like Jonathan Hedrick, Chuck Pineau, David Byrne, Robert A. Multari, Greg A. Elysée, Russell Nohelty, Don Nguyen, and Michael Watson (just to name a few).
7. Phil’s Pick: TRIGGERGIRL 6: JUSTICE - by Palmiotti, Santacruz and Conner
Creators: Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, Juan Santacruz, Adam Hughes, Dave Johnson, Joe Linsner, Ryan Sook, Megan Hutchinson, John J Hill, and Dave Sharpe
Phil: Coming from superstar creators Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner, and co. is the dramatic return of Triggergirl 6!
Triggergirl 6 is the story of an assassin that was created in a lab by the most brilliant minds in the animal world by using a mix of animal and human DNA, created to protect her architects from their worst enemy: mankind.
NSFW action books are always good performers on Kickstarter. And with this team on the book, it easily became a must-have and sailed to over 1,000 backers and nearly $90,000 raised.
6. Kat’s Pick: Nightmare Theater 3D: The Final Chapter - Horror Anthology
Creators: D.E. Schrader, Clay Adams, and more!
Kat: Speaking of anthologies and community, let’s talk Nightmare Theater. Clay Adams and D.E. Schrader’s love for horror is apparent in this trilogy of anthologies. It brings together a collective of voices spinning narratives from every side of horror from slashers to Lovecraft.
The last volume even has a fun spin by making the book 3-D. It’s great to see a property spanning three volumes always trying to level up, especially for its big, third act finale.
6. Phil’s Pick: LONG DISTANCE: African Folklore Anthology [Deluxe Hardcover]
Creators: Beserat Debebe, Feven Gashaw, Ermias Assefa, Tatenda Ndove, Bill Masuku, Tsion Assefa, Kaleab Birhanu, Cassandra Mark, Yared Girma, Dawit Solomon, and more!
Phil: An African Folklore anthology created by a Pan-African Dream Team! According to the creative team, this book is perfect for fans of “Love, Death + Robots”, “Star Wars: Visions”, “Pokémon: Evolutions”, and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.
In addition to this anthology covering an incredibly compelling and meaningful topic, what really stood out to me about the project is its art. All of the images shared on the page - covers and interior art - are simply breathtaking. And they share a lot of preview content. The entire page is a spectacle to be seen and clearly is a labor of love from the entire team behind the anthology.
5. Kat’s Pick: PRIVATE DANCE #1 - NSFW comic where fantasy & reality meet
Creators: Pat Shand, Yishan Li, Steve Jay, and Shannon Lee
Kat: You can’t do a Top 10 Kickstarter list without adding Pat Shand to the mix. He has a high output of some incredible projects, but the reason I added Private Dance to the Top 10 is because it started a MAJOR move for Shand’s publishing company. He found a lot of success with a few volumes of his sex positive anthologies like Cheeky and Thirsty, and used that success to launch a whole new imprint. Private Dance was the launch of Cheeky Comics, telling longer formed stories all centered around what made the Cheeky brand successful in the first place. It’s a brilliant business move!
5. Phil’s Pick: DRACULA VOLUME 1: THE IMPALER by Matt Wagner & Kelley Jones
Creators: Matt Wagner, Kelley Jones, Jose Villarrubia, Brennan Wagner, and more!
Phil: The secret history of Dracula is revealed an all-new 112-page graphic novel from two lends Matt Wagner & Kelley Jones.
Dracula: The Impaler reminds me of the classic pulp horror comics I would read endlessly in my youth. Dark, gritty, and fantastical to its very core. The team brands this new take on the world’s most famous vampire as a “back-to-basics” approach, sticking close to the original Bram Stoker classic and seeking to fill in the intentional gaps in the Count’s story from the original novel.
This incredibly compelling approach to Dracula really resonated with Kickstarter audiences, raising over $200,000 from over 3,000 backers!
4. Kat’s Pick: Glarien of White Ash 1-3:a Fantasy Series for Mature Readers
Creators: Charlie Stickney, Romina Moranelli, Fin Cramb, and Conor Hughes
Kat: Speaking of Kickstarter juggernauts, I have to give Charlie Stickney and co. the spotlight. Launching a franchise can be hard, but keeping a fanbase interested with said franchise can be EVEN HARDER. Stickney expertly excites his current audience for each new installment of the White Ash universe with tight storytelling and a clean looking Kickstarter page. You’ll always receive premium items and care when it comes to a Stickney campaign.
4. Phil’s Pick: SAINTED LOVE: A gay science-fiction adventure comic
Creators: Vault Comics, Steve Orlando, Giopota, Simon Bowland
Phil: A sexy, gay time-travel romance too powerful to be contained to a single era!
Steve Orlando and Vault always produce quality content - and together they’re a force to be reckoned with. A steamy MLM romance with both Sci-fi and sport (boxing) elements is such an easy sell. All tied together by Giopota’s art (which manages to be expressive, cute, and sexy all at the same time).
Sainted Love is the kind of project I wish we saw more of on Kickstarter.
3. Kat’s Pick: Good Omens: the Official (and Ineffable) Graphic Novel
Creators: The Terry Pratchett Estate, BHP Comics, Neil Gaiman, Colleen Doran
Kat: This is not only the biggest comic book project of the year, but the biggest comic book project OF ALL TIME! It made $3M, and had close to 37K backers. I can only imagine how many new backers came to the Kickstarter ecosystem because of this campaign. Neil Gaiman has one of the biggest fanbases of any author with a built-in comic book fanbase because of his work on Sandman, and adding comic book veteran, Colleen Doran, to the mix made this book even more exciting. This campaign knew how to motivate that fanbase to create a product that was obviously in demand, especially after finding even more fans with the Good Omens TV Show.
3. Phil’s Pick: I Summoned Cthulhu to Fund My Kickstarter #1 - HORROR/COMEDY
Creators: Pat Shand, Patrick Mulholland, James Offredi, Sergio Quijada, and more!
Phil: I Summoned Cthulhu to Fund My Kickstarter is a loving parody of all the trends in comics and on crowdfunding, poking fun at them all while also fully embracing them.
As Kat mentioned above, it’s impossible to make a Top 10 Kickstarter list without talking about Pat Shand and Space Between Entertainment. One of the (if not the) most prolific creators out there, consistently delivering quality projects. And while it’s tough picking one Kickstarter from Pat for the Top 10 list this year, the clear winner in my book was ISCtFMK.
A comedy/horror parodic commentary on the ways creators “sell their souls” to succeed in this crazy business. It’s delightfully meta in concept alone, but also stars fictionalized versions of several Kickstarter creators who are featured on this top 10 list - including Pat Shand, Charlie Stickney, Raven Gregory, Russell Nohelty, Travis Gibb, and more. Every once in a while, a Kickstarter comes around that really breaks the mold and is unlike anything that’s come before it. And Pat Shand delivered exactly that with this project.
2. Kat’s Pick: TERRY MOORE AFTER DARK...
Creators: Abstract Studio
Kat: Indie comics have grown exponentially since the birth of Kickstarter! And it’s a true honor to see one of independent comics’ OGs, Terry Moore, grace the platform. Moore made a name for himself back in the 90s with his cult classic, Strangers in Paradise. A book that showcased realistic portraits of woman - both in Moore’s character driven storytelling and black & white art style. Moore has continued his independent empire though the direct market publishing books in the same universe like: Motor Girl, Echo, Rachel Rising, and so many more.
After Dark was a great first leap into the crowdfunding space by leaning into his most popular characters and utilizing a NSFW spin that’s already popular with both Moore’s brand and Kickstarter itself. Hope this is the start of more Kickstarter projects from Abstract Studio.
2. Phil’s Pick: Good Omens: the Official (and Ineffable) Graphic Novel
Creators: The Terry Pratchett Estate, BHP Comics, Neil Gaiman, Colleen Doran
Phil: The only overlapping project on Kat’s and my list - and that’s no surprise since it’s the biggest comic book Kickstarter to date.
As a big Neil Gaiman fan, this graphic novel adaptation is a hugely exciting project in concept only. But combine that with the way it absolutely took over Kickstarter while it was live and you couldn’t help but feel the electricity and buzz surrounding the project.
The campaign also has some of the most exciting and varied Stretch Goals I’ve ever seen on Kickstarter. Art Prints from so prolific artists (the most surprising for me was Heartstoppers’ Alice Oseman), graphic novel print quality upgrades, Digital livestream events, accompanying bookmarks and ribbons, and a Foreword by Michael Sheen, David Tennant and John Hamm.
1. Kat’s Pick: MIGHTY MORPHIN POWER RANGERS: THE RETURN New Comic Series
Creators: BOOM! Studios, Amy Jo Johnson, Matt Hotson, Nico Leon, and Dan Mora
Kat: As a lifeline Power Rangers fan, I’m over the moon about this project! BOOM! Studios was one of the first big publishers to utilized Kickstarter as a large form of their business and found multiple success stories. Over the years, we’ve seen these bigger publishers recycle stories that have already been published and make big collections for those titles, but I’m glad in 2023 many of these publishers are starting to create original stories for the platform.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return’s release will coincide with the direct market as the Kickstarter focuses on the collection of the book and the direct market will release floppies to comic book stores. It’s a great way to double dip and present a new project to multiple different markets.
As a business venture, I’m excited to see how this will push other publishers to utilize Kickstarter, but as a Power Rangers fan I’m just excited about the story as a whole. The Power Rangers comic books have done a wonderful job at aging the television property, while still keeping the heart of the franchise intact. I’m excited to see what the original Pink Power Ranger will add to that mythos. With Amy Jo on board you’re going to get a whole new perspective on the character, all while getting loyal Power Rangers fans onto Kickstarter and maybe even comic books as a whole.
1. Phil’s Pick: Meanwhile... A Comic Shop Anthology
Creators: Kevin Sharp, Ryan Higgins, Brian Michael Bendis, Bill Walko, Eva Cabrera, Ashanti Fortson, Dan Johnson, Rachel Distler, Corinne Halbert, Liana Kangas, Sarah Leuver, Scott Snyder, Jock, Jenn St-Onge, Joshua Williamson, and more!
Phil: It is genuinely crazy just how star-studded the team for this anthology is. The legendary creators listed above isn’t even the entire team. Head over to the Kickstarter page to see the full incredible list.
A celebration of all things comics and the stores that showcase them. In addition to its impressive team, Meanwhile also has an incredibly appealing pitch. All comic fans have a soft spot for their Local Comic Book Store. So an 80-page comic full of stories all about brick-and-mortar stores is sure to hit a soft spot for many potential backers.
In a year full of exciting projects - and especially really cool comic anthologies - Meanwhile manages to stand out as one of the most exciting.
Media
And let’s discuss some popular non-comics media!
Wish
Kat: Disney celebrates their 100th anniversary, and to continue the party they’ve released a new princess movie, Wish. The film goes out of its way to fit in fun homages to the animation house, but does leaning into nostalgia make this a good movie?
Wish is….fine. It’s neither bad or good. The songs have some catchy beats but aren’t as memorable as a “Let it Go” or “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. But what’s most frustrating about Wish is that it actually had potential to be GREAT. There’s a solid story in there somewhere: Asha is a pretty likable princess (but doesn’t have any stand out moments), the animation is unique (but feels childish at times), and I even liked Chris Pine’s villainy (this isn’t a spoiler: it’s revealed pretty early on that he’s the big bad, which is actually pretty refreshing).
I’m sad to report that Wish is another easy to skip theater experience that’s better suited for a Disney Plus night in. Hopefully it finds an afterlife on streaming like Encanto or Elemental did because Asha and company deserve better than this first installment.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off
Kat: Scott Pilgrim wasn’t fully on my radar until Phil recommended it to me. I don’t have a real nostalgic connection to the movie and never got into the comic books, so I thought the anime would be an automatic “pass” for me. But once I heard that the anime actually changed the original story that piqued my interest.
Adaptations are a hard beast. Direct line-by-line adaptations can be boring, but then changing up the story too much can lose the essence of the original source material. Scott Pilgrim is an unique case because it has other adaptations that are already loyal to the source material. It gives the anime more wiggle room to do something different, especially with the creative partners from the comic and movies so heavily involved in this newest installment of the franchise.
I liked that Ramona took more ownership of her own story, and because of that the exes had more screen time to be fleshed out as characters of their own. And even if it’s not Scott’s story, he still has plenty of shining moments that also expands his own narrative.
I won’t say the anime made me a fan of Scott Pilgrim, but I’m glad I watched it. It’s a great example of a comic book adaptation done right! I especially enjoyed the show’s tone. The music was banging (I never skipped the intro), and the overall anime influences was truly nailed from the comedic beats all the way to the action sequences. No matter what side of the Scott Pilgrim camp you’re on, you should give this show a shot. Don’t be afraid of change if it means good storytelling.
“Look, I’ve dabbled in being a bitch. It’s part of the reason I moved here. I was really hoping to just leave it all behind.” (Ramona Flowers, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World)
Phil: I truly believe that Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is the perfect way to adapt the franchise to a Netflix series.
We’ve already gotten a (mostly) faithful adaptation of the comics in the form of 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. When this Netflix series was announced with the cast from the film returning to reprise their roles from over a decade earlier, I was pretty excited. I love the movie, particularly for its cast. So it was really exciting to see them all return. But after the comics, movie, and video game, I wasn’t too keen on seeing the same story adapted again.
So imagine my surprise when Scott Pilgrim Takes Off begins by following the “script” to a T…only to completely veer off-course at the end of its pilot. I’m very glad that I watched SPTO spoiler-free. I wasn’t expecting this to be such a departure from the source material. Nor was I expecting the Evil Exes to all receive so much depth and development - in isolation, in relation to each other, and in relation to Ramona.
Which brings me to Ramona Flowers. Placing her as the lead of the series is maybe the most interesting decision that could have been made adapting the series. She effective has the same arc that she does in the movie and comic. But instead of going through that arc as a (relatively) passive protagonist (compared to Scott), Ramona is driving the narrative. She’s trying to change, confronting her past, and trying to build something new without falling back into her old habits. But this time, she’s the driving force for this change rather than a passenger to Scott’s journey.
I honestly can’t heap enough praise onto this series. The comedy, the action, the animation, the cast, the character work (I haven’t even talked about the side characters). Everything comes together perfectly. If you’re a Scott Pilgrim fan who is interested in seeing a fresh take on the story, then this is a must-watch.
Thanksgiving
Phil: There will be no leftovers…because nobody wants them…
I went into Thanksgiving with high hopes. I’d seen positive buzz for the movie and am a huge Slasher fan. With this in mind, I went into the theater prepared for one of two things: (1.) a well-made and well-written new Slasher, or (2.) a bad-but-fun kitschy comedy horror.
And while the movie was definitely aiming for Option #2, Thanksgiving unfortunately doesn’t manage to be all that fun. I only had two genuine laughs throughout the entire movie. But other than those, most of comedy fell pretty flat for me. I’m all for cynical black comedy, but Thanksgiving never really has anything to say behind it other than the generic “consumerism is bad” song that it sings for its entire runtime.
The characters were either boring-as-tears to watch - including unfortunately bland Final Girl, Gabby - or so intentionally unlikeable that it actually takes you out of the movie having to spending time with them. And the second act of the movie really drags. It makes a 106 minute movie feel much longer than it actually is.
On the more positive side, Thanksgiving’s kills are all inventive, brutal, and gory. They were a welcome addition and one of the most memorable aspects of the movie. I just wish that most of them weren’t so heavily CGI (and not good CGI…) And the third act is much more interesting and tense than the first two - particularly the Thanksgiving dinner sequence.
All-in-all, Thanksgiving might be a fun background watch for the kills alone. But it definitely doesn’t offer much outside of being on of very few Thanksgiving-themed horror movies. I’ll just watch Kristy instead.
Kat: In our last newsletter, we were on the opposite side of the Tomato with our rating of The Marvels. We thought it was a lot better than critics were painting the movie out to be. As for Thanksgiving, we’re still disagreeing with the Tomato, but this time around, we thought the meter rated this one WAY TOO high.
Phil and I are big slasher fans, and know how to have a good time with a kitschy flick. (I mean two of my favorite franchises are Final Destination and Resident Evil). But this one tried way too hard to be kitschy that it lost the authenticity of what some of the cringiest films have to offer. There wasn’t a character to latch onto (sorry Addison Rae), there are characters that literally disappear halfway through the film (I’m looking at you Mitch), the kills were subpar (even if I appreciated that the CGI made it look different than your current lineup of slashers), and the villain’s motives were pretty weak (there was a point in the movie where I wasn’t even sure if it was a whodunnit anymore).
What’s the most disappointing about this flick is that it had potential. I want a new Slasher to haunt my dreams. I thought John Carver could be one of them, but not even basting the final girl’s step mother is going to get me to sing its praises.
Comic Recommendations
And finally, we’ll recommend some comic books! Since we talked about twenty Kickstarters in the main topic we’ll skip the Kickstarter shout-out this week.
Without further ado, let’s spotlight an Indie Comic in the Direct Market, a Marvel/DC book, and a Webcomic!
Indie Comic: Snotgirl
Kat: In celebration of the Scott Pilgrim’s anime premiere, I wanted to highlight my personal favorite Bryan Lee O'Malley comic (and one of my favorite comics, period), Snotgirl. In collaboration with Leslie Hung, O’Malley crafts a modern psychological thriller that uncovers the true horrors of being “very online”. A dark tale with cheery, bright visuals that expertly fine tunes its tone.
The series follows a social media influencer who wants the perfect boyfriend, the perfect friends, the perfect online presence…the perfect life. But there is one thing standing in her way…she has horrible allergies. Her allergies become a plot device to put the reader in a haze. It truly makes you question what’s reality and fiction in Snotgirl’s hollow, LA social scene.
The book has a queer angle that feels unique to any comic book relationship I’ve seen before. Snotgirl is in love with a twisted, unreachable socialite that becomes the catalyst to Snotgirl’s psychedelic journey. Their relationship is the heart of this book…but that doesn’t mean it’s a healthy one. It’s anything but!
If you enjoy Scott Pilgrim’s over the top dissection of romance, then Snotgirl should be on your must-read pile.
DC Comic: Wonder Woman
Kat: I’ve always wanted to get into Wonder Woman, but throughout my 20+ years reading comics there hasn’t been a run that truly grabbed me…until now. Tom King and Daniel Sampere celebrate what’s so special about the character all while creating a new mythos for her and the Amazons. King builds intrigue behind the mystery of Wonder Woman’s new daughter, Trinity. His CIA background brings weight to the political undertone of the story. The US VS Paradise Island has never been done to this scale, and every issue does a great job at delivering tension.
And King always has the biggest A-Listers in the art scene as collaborators, Sampere is no exception. The action sequences are out of this world. He utilizes Wonder Woman’s classic equipment with a unique modern flare. King and Sampere ‘s Wonder Woman is a classic in the making. And don’t you want to see history unfold on a monthly basis? Pick this book up!
WEBTOON: Ghost Boy
“Struggling student, Miles, learns that the happenings at his school are not what they seems. Along with star public, Jayson, they plan to bring justice and fairness to their school system. But can Miles really trust Jayson as a friend of the opposite side?”
Phil: The thing that immediately stood out to me about Ghost Boy is the art. I really love the unique style and use of color in the series. It’s a fresh style, but one that also fits WEBTOON so well.
A reboot of a previous version of this comic, Ghost Boy(2023) is still early in its story. But I can already appreciate the many LGBTQ+ characters featured and am eager to see how the core romance of the series develops over time.
